Program Description:

This training is intended for mental health professionals and other helpers who would like to develop a thorough understanding of contemporary issues faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. It will also cover elements of gender identity and sexuality. The trainers will provide a brief introduction to the history of LGBTQIA+ persons; including discrimination and pathologizing from mental health providers. In addition, ethical considerations and best practices articulated by professional organizations such as WPATH, ACA, NASW, and AAMFT will be shared in detail. Lastly, this training will highlight ways in which helpers can develop and enhance their allyship.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Gain working knowledge of the history, the development of, contemporary issues, and best practices in working with gender, sexually, and affectually diverse individuals and communities

  2. Learn about the legal, ethical, and professional issues involved in working with LGBTQIA+ individuals and the application of these principles

  3. Understand the current best practices for mental healthcare for LGBTQIA+ individuals
