Program Description:

The presenters will identify ways in which mental health professionals can support LGBTQIA+ individuals by infusing motivational interviewing (MI) into the therapeutic system. MI is a directive and nuanced conversation style that is helpful for individuals who have been minoritized and unheard by others, which has been the experience of many members of the LGBTQIA+ community. MI honors autonomy, unconditional acceptance, and fosters partnership that many conventional approaches lack. This one-hour presentation will provide practical skills mental health professionals can immediately apply in their work with LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Attendees will gain foundational concepts of motivational interviewing

  2. Attendees will review best practices for working with LGBTQIA+  individuals

  3. Attendees will learn how to integrate motivational interviewing consistent skills in the therapeutic system.
